Engraving by E J Roberts of the famous tower in Italy. The building of the tower began in 1173, and after several interruptions was finally completed in 1350. In 1178, when the tower was 10 metres high, it became obvious that the tower was leaning. Over the years adjustments were made to compensate for the lean, and work is still ongoing to maintain the building and prevent it from collapsing.
