Engraved plate by J Mynde from 'A Course in Experimental Philosophy' (1744) by J T Desaguliers. The use of a barometer for showing the heights of mountains is also shown. John Theophilus Desaguliers (1683-1744), a French-born scientist and inventor, was chaplain and philosopher to Frederick, Prince of Wales. He wrote a series of lectures in natural philosophy, which were a runaway success. Apparatus from the lectures was assembled in the King George III collection, now at the Science Museum in London.
