Hand-coloured etching by Peter Fabris (active 1768-1779). Illustrated plate from William Hamilton's (1730-1803) study of Italian volcanoes, 'Campi Phlegraei' published in Naples, 1776. The 'Capo dell'Arco' headland is approximately 150 feet high and shows (1) stratum of tufa, rapilli and a mixture of ashes and (2) a strata of lava. The island, which was produced by volcanic activity, is approximately four miles in circumference and has a generally flat soil surface.
