This chart shows the location of the Spurn Point lighthouse, designed in 1767 by the English civil engineer John Smeaton, (1724-1792) and built on the mouth of the River Humber in the East Riding of Yorkshire between 1772 and 1777. Smeaton's revolutionary design for the Eddystone Lighthouse off the coast of Devon in 1756 set a precedent for later lighthouse engineers by being built completely of stone. This project was one of several which followed his earlier success.
