Caption:
A photograph of allied Cromwell tanks escorting a line of German prisoners of war captured during fighting around Falaise, France, taken by Esten for the Daily Herald newspaper on 16 August, 1944. During the fierce fighting to encircle the German Army at Falaise these tanks of the Polish Armoured Division accepted the surrender of over one hundred prisoners. To prevent the enemy from gaining useful information, the Military Censor ordered the newspaper to remove the tanks from this photograph. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
