The sophisticated LEGO constructional system, comprising blocks held together with studs and tubes, was developed in Denmark and launched in 1955. The name derives from the Danish phrase 'leg godt', meaning 'play well'. The original release, called the 'LEGO System of Play', consisted of 28 sets of blocks and eight vehicles.
