Caption:
A photograph of Labour Party MP Herbert Morrison (1888-1965) making a speech at Hyde Park in London, taken by Roper for the Daily Herald newspaper on 7 May, 1939.
A founder member of the London Labour Party, Morrison became a Member of Parliament in 1923. A man of strong - and sometimes controversial - opinions, Morrison was strongly in favour of intervention in the Spanish Civil War. He served first as Minister of Supply and then as Home Secretary during World War Two.
After the war, Morrison was responsible for helping to shape Labour Party policies on nationalisation and welfare. He became Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the House of Commons in 1945, later serving as Foreign Secretary. He entered the House of Lords in 1959.
This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
