Caption:
In 1998, Lee Pickering took part in a male hormonal contraceptive and testosterone replacement implant trial at Edinburgh University. The trial involved the taking of a daily pill which stopped the production of sperm and testosterone. Pickering's testosterone was replaced by an implant as a tablet would either have been destroyed by the stomach (if the dosage was too small) or risked damaging the liver (if the dosage was too large). Pickering experienced a side effect of a mildly increased libido.
