A photograph of a silver salver, taken by James Jarche [1891-1965] for the Daily Herald newspaper in 1943. This silver tray was presented to Professor Alexander Fleming [1881-1955] in 1943 by his colleagues at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London. It marked Fleming's election to The Fellowship of the Royal Society. Working as a doctor and researcher at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London, Alexander Fleming discovered the antibiotic penicillin in 1929. He successfully isolated the chemical from the mould Penicillium notatum. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs.
