A photograph of a silver salver, taken by James Jarche [1891-1965] for the Daily Herald newspaper in 1943.
This silver tray was presented to Professor Alexander Fleming [1881-1955] in 1943 by his colleagues at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London. It marked Fleming's election to The Fellowship of the Royal Society.
Working as a doctor and researcher at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London, Alexander Fleming discovered the antibiotic penicillin in 1929. He successfully isolated the chemical from the mould Penicillium notatum.
