Caption:
This disc, derived from chronophotographs made by the British photographer Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904), was one of several made for Muybridge's Zoopraxiscope projector, designed in 1879. The zoopraxiscope was based on the principle of the Phenakistoscope, with a counter-rotating shutter which briefly flashed each image on the screen as the disc rotated. The drawings were elongated to counteract the foreshortening effect of the counter-rotating shutter. Muybridge gave highly successful lectures with this apparatus for many years.
