Caption:
British Railways train of empty milk tankers, hauled by the Castle Class 4-6-0 locomotive number 7037 at Twyford station, Berkshire, 7 August 1952.
The coming of the railways made it possible to supply fresh milk to Britain's towns and cities. Milk was transported on fast freight trains, at first in special vans, then in refrigerated containers, that kept it cool and fresh. However, by the 1950s the railways' milk trains faced increasing competion from roads.
This was the last Castle class locomotive to be constructed, and it was named "Swindon" , in honour of the works where it was built.
