A photographic portrait of Professor Richard Owen (1804-1892), taken at the studio of Herbert Rose Barraud (1845-1896), Oxford Street, London, in about 1885.
Owen, an anatomist, taxonomist and palaeontologist, played a key role in the founding of the Natural History Museum, London. A government advisor and royal family tutor, he increased public awareness of biology and created the word 'dinosaur'.
