Page of a Belfast City Hospital discharge summary for W G, case number 46 in Dr P C Elmes' work with McCaughey and Wade to produce the first detailed UK report of the relationship between exposure to asbestos and the lung cancer mesothelioma. The summary reports that W G was admitted to hospital for three days to treat the accumulation of fluid around his lungs, a symptom of his mesothelioma, discovered when it caused shortness of breath. He later died, and the diagnosis of mesothelioma was confirmed at post-mortem.
