Construction of North Church Tunnel, Berkhamsted, on the London & Birmingham Railway, drawn by S C Brees and engraved by A Picken, 1837. The railway opened the following year, and was the first to connect London to another major city. Building tunnels and cuttings was dangerous work, and navvies were frequently killed and injured in rock falls and explosions.
