Caption:
AERE: the Atomic Energy Research Establishment pursued the nuclear energy and research programme at Harwell where experimental reactors like BEPO ( British Experimental Pile ?O?) were used for research. Commissioned in 1948 during the early years of the nuclear programme, BEPO demonstrated that commercial power reactors could be viable and lead to the building of Windscale Pile. Photograph by Walter Nurnberg who transformed industrial photography after WWII using film studio lighting techniques.
