Caption:
This photograph was probably taken in England between 1900 and 1930. Before mechanisation, hay was harvested by a team of farm workers. It would be gathered into sheaves and the sheaves themselves were then brought together so that they could be leaned upright into each other to form a stook. This provided a temporary protection against adverse weather conditions before the hay was gathered on to carts to be taken to form the hay ricks.
