Sport, science and technology have been inextricably linked since the day an inflated pig bladder was transformed into a football. All aspects of sport are affected by science and technology, and the sports equipment business is now worth millions of pounds, selling to amateurs and professionals alike. Despite the advances one has to wonder whether the technology in sport is too good and can actually diminish the competitive thrill of the game. As golf balls and tennis balls are designed to be hit harder, longer and straighter, are skills levels and the ideals of raw talent lessened? And how should sports organisations control the use of new technology? While better equipment that is the product of expensive research and development allows amateurs to aspire to the levels of their professional heroes, does the application of science to sport risk ruining the game? Or has science improved the sport we watch and play?
